Former Nike Contractor Alleges Gender Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation in Lawsuit
Former Nike contractor Jazz Lyles has brought a lawsuit against the company, alleging gender discrimination, harassment and retaliation. Lyles identifies as transmasculine/nonbinary and prefers the use of the gender pronouns “they/them/theirs.” Lyles informed Nike of their gender identity and preferred pronouns before their employment with Nike began on May 1, 2017.
In the lawsuit, Lyles alleges the employees repeatedly misused their preferred pronouns and subjected Lyles to sexual remarks, stereotypical comments, ridicule, crude jokes and epithets. Lyles alleges they repeatedly informed Nike management and Mainz Brady (the staffing company that placed Lyles at Nike) of the harassment. Lyles was terminated on September 4, 2018.
Prior to filing their lawsuit, Lyles filed a complaint with the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) in 2018.
Lyles’ lawsuit is not the only employment discrimination lawsuit against Nike. Nike recently settled a racial discrimination lawsuit and a potential class-action gender discrimination lawsuit and racial discrimination lawsuit are ongoing.
