U.S. Dept. of Ed. Investigating Race Discrimination Against Students in Forsyth County

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is investigating allegations that the Forsyth County school board discriminated against students on the basis of race. The Southern Coalition for Social Justice filed the complaint on behalf of Action4Equity, a local organization for concerned citizens.

The complaint alleges that the local school board and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools failed to take timely action following complaints of air quality at one of the schools, a school which has a population of mostly African American and Hispanic students.  The complaint compares the situation to another school in the district, which has a predominantly white student population, and alleges that the air quality concerns were addressed more quickly at that school.
